Stair fun

We celebrated Hat’s birthday with an amazing cake made by her amazing baker sister! God gifted Brookie with a talent to bake. Her espinaca is addicting!!  Don’t ever pass it up. That’s my advice for the day to you.

You are welcome.

We had jammied-up the kids before we went over to their house, so they figured out they could get some pretty good speed on the wood stairs in their footies. But then somehow they found this cardboard and made the Reymond’s stairs a slide!

Hat mentioned she had footies like them, and after that of course the kids begged her to put them on (it didn’t take much begging!). And then Hat takes a ride on the slide! So now we have Hat in footie pajamas.

Celebrating her 19th birthday.

Sliding down her stairs on a box.

This is nothing that surprised us with this girl though!

LOVE her face!! They really were getting some speed!!

She survived! And earned some serious Hough kid cred.

That Wonderful Wiffleball (in Photos)

Best #wiffleball field ever. Need to get a full game going on this. #wiffle #kansascity #monarchs

I love the Wiffleball. I love that it is like baseball, but playable just about anywhere and with as few as two people. I love that I can play in the backyard with Beckham without concern of breaking something. This stupid little ball is so great I thought I would share a collection of photos over the past year or so of family and covenant family enjoying Wiffle Ball. Above is Beckham and I at 19th and Paseo in Kansas City. Bob Reymond showed me this field and it was so much fun to play on.

Below is an impromptu Sunday morning game before Sunday School began. This picture almost feels like something from the late 1800s of people playing outside a church.

Here is a neighborhood game with Ron, Dillion, Gwen, Gavin and Ezra as Sadie Piper continued her pursuit of riding without training wheels. Also Laura, Katie and Tammy giving commentary in the background.

This is from a Sunday night at the Redeemer Barn Field.  Sam beaned Laura, Caleb went yard and Meredith and Emily danced.

Here Sam Basham gets a game going in his cabin at RiverRanch at bedtime. A light switch was busted, but Tim replaced that for less than a dollar.

Here is another shot of the barn field from this summer, we even had foul poles, no idea how we failed to get a good picture of this.

While waiting for Baxter to show up for Oasis this game broke out. New Hope actually makes a pretty good field with a big stained glass monster wall in right field. Sam is pitching to Lenin in this shot.

Rico and Sam get a game going during the Hanging of the Greens Chili Supper (never really hit the ball here, just for fun photo)

Before Sunday night cookouts began we had this field which made for a fun game when people stood on the balcony to watch Homerun derby.

A second shot of Becks and I playing on this downtown KC field. This spring I want to take a group to go play on this. The building to the right is the Paseo YMCA. The players are all Kansas City Monarchs.

Even Sadie Piper likes to play a little Wiffle. If she hits a ball she runs the bases while I throw extra wiffle balls at her.

Laura at RiverRanch getting pretty serious.

and the switch.

Joy was always one of the most enthusiastic Wiffleballers at RiverRanch, she and Sam formed a team called “The No Buntus” They forbid Ubuntu from being on their team and also forbid bunting in general. Don’t let that stance fool you, girl can hit.

Our favorite homemade play-doh!

Playdough1-BLOG-450x278

So it’s not surprising to me that Mel’s recipe for play-doh is the best! I don’t have anything against store-bought, but it gets pricey and  because of that I turn into “fun hater mom” cause I don’t want the Crazies to mix the colors. But then I let them, but then it’s all one big mess and inevitably we don’t put the lid on well enough so next time it’s a rock anyways and all that fun-hating was in vain. So now that I say that, maybe I do have something against store-bought play-doh…Buuuuut making it at home has solved this and I get to be “cool fun mom” instead! Now play-doh is more of a disposable toy! Play for a week and toss!

I’ve tried a lot of recipes for play-doh (using Jello, Kool-aid…). While I haven’t disliked any of them, this one is by far the easiest, cheapest and fastest!!

Homemade Playdough from Mel’s Kitchen Cafe

*Makes about 2 1/2 cups of playdough

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup salt
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 cup water
1 tablespoon cooking oil, like canola or vegetable
4-6 drops food coloring

DIRECTIONS:
In a medium saucepan, combine the dry ingredients. In a 2-cup or larger liquid measuring cup, combine the water, oil, and food coloring. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix with a wooden spoon. Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the dough pulls away from the sides of the pan and forms a ball (it will be shaggy and messy looking). This should only take a few minutes.

On a lightly greased countertop, turn out the playdough and knead until smooth. Store the playdough in a tightly covered container or ziploc bag. Tightly covered, the playdough will keep for several months.

For his actual birthday dinner he asked for ice cream. So we headed back a few days later!

We went ice skating at Town Center too. Turning 7 is hard work!

Beckham, at 7:

-likes to pick a team to root for, no matter what sport him and Brian are watching

-still likes to mix foods looking for good combos. and is particular about which flavors will work good together

-loves to play Legos, TMNT, baseball, with sticks, creating things (enter Duct tape)

-learning how to read and getting faster every week. he works hard and perseveres

-has a sweet heart and is perceptive of others

-wants to be a zookeeper when he grows up

-loves mac n cheese, any dessert, eats everything in order from what he likes least to most at every meal

-he’s still slow as molasses. but appealing to his love of animals, we can get him to move faster when we tell him to “be a cheetah”

-prefers summer. really took to swimming. loves to “adventure”
